Monument record MDO47730 - Later prehistoric field system, Badbury Rings, Pamphill

A field system associated with the prehistoric enclosure in High Wood is visible as low earthworks on lidar imagery. It extents to the east of the woods where it is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. The system was digitally plotted during the Dorset Middle Stour Catchment AI&M Project.

RCHME survey in June 1993 recorded faint traces of a probable `Celtic' field system demarcated by a linear arrangement of scarps, up to 0.2m high, extending in a N and NW direction for up to 130m, from the exterior lip of the outermost ditch of Badbury Rings hillfort. They appear to be part of a larger NNW-SSE axial alignment extending at least as far as High Wood some 400m to the NE. At least two lynchets and a low bank abut and appear to have been cut by the outer ditch of the hillfort, although the considerable amount of degredation associated with tracks around the ditch makes their precise relationship with the hillfort impossible to determine. One of the lynchets has been clearly cut by a section of the Badbury to Dorchester Roman road (ST 90 SE 4e) which runs obliquely across the field system, on the NW side of the hillfort. <1>
