Monument record MDO47732 - Gravel surface at Top O'Town, Dorchester
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Observations of a telephone cable trench dug north-south across Bridport Road outside the West Gate found a thin gravel layer on top of natural chalk. The layer as seen to be at least 27 feet wide. At the north edge, the chalk dips away as if to suggest a ditch, but this may be a local anomally. The gravel is slightly outside the line of the town wall, and may be the remains of the Roman approach road from Exeter.
