Summary

Deserted settlement of Stiteford and Stincteford recorded in Domesday Book. Field investigations have located no traces of the settlement on the ground. No traces are visible on aerial photographs.

Full Description

Stinsford. "The village is nearly depopulated, there only remaining the church, the seat of the Earl of Ilchester, The vicarage and farm houses, and some cottages to the north of the church..." <1> "Stinsford (SY 711910): Church virtually alone, but much garden and trees. No earthworks visible" (extract from a list of lost villages). <2> Reverend Medway knew nothing about the area of Stinsford being depopulated. No trace of deserted Medieval village was found during field investigation and the evidence in Authy. 1 and 2 is not sufficient to assume that such a site exists. <3> Stinsford. SY 715914. "Almost depopulated by the Earl of Ilchester". <4> SY 715914. Deserted Medieval Village of Stinsford. Listed. <5> Recorded in Domesday in two parts, Stiteford and Stincteford, by Hutchins time the Manor of Stinsford was 'nearly depopulated, there only remaining the church , the sent of the Earl of Ilchester, the vicorage and farmhouse and some cottages to the North of the Church'. The old village disappeared when Kingston Mourwood Park was laid out. <6> Nothing visible on air photographs. <7>
