Monument record MDO47794 - Bronze Age Barrow north of Maiden Castle, Winterborne St Martin
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
An unidentified round barrow excavated circa 1840 by J Sydenham. His barrow 8, it is listed by Grinsell as Winterborne St Martin 34c. Both Grinsell and RCHME suggest that it may be one of the barrows located just outside Maiden Castle, a little to the northwest (see SY 68 NE 30 and associated records). However, there were more barrows excavated in this area by Sydenham than are definitely known now, so identification is by no means certain. Sydenham described the monument as follows: "A barrow, close to [SY 68 NE 161] presented a plain interment of burnt bones on the centre of the floor. In the midst of the ashes were two bronze daggers...".
