Full Description

Barrows on land owned by Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, on the chalk downs between SY 684857 and SY 693853 (between those two points and Bincombe opened in 1842 by Rev J J Smith. No 49 d (i-iv) Warne 65: 4 barrows opened by digging trench from the east to the centre: one contained two (intrusive?) inhumations; the other three revealed traces of burning. No 49 e. Warne No 66: 3 ft high small barrow; probable primary inverted MBA collared urn, and secondary inverted LBA globular urn with small cup. No 49 f. Large barrow: 12 ft high. Warne No 68: Central cairn not excavated; 4 intrusive inhumations on top. No 49 g. Warne No 67. Two intrusive inhumations (probably aged 12-15) at top and "a quantity of bone" at west. No 49 h. A low barrow. Warne No 69 (so-called twin-barrow); two (primary?) inhumations; secondary cremation in MBA urn containing bi-conical incense-cup. (1,2) From description contained on the first paragraph of Authy 1, the excavation reports refer to barrows contained in groups SY 68 NE 76 & 84 and SY 68 SE 34. No more positive evidence for siting could be obtained. (3) Many barrows, certainly or probably in the parish of Bincombe, have ben excavated but few of the records can be related to visible remains. Conversely, several have clearly been dug into but cannot berelated to the barrows diggers' description. On Bincombe Down on the Ridgeway, four barrows were opened (Warne, CTD (toup) No 65) in 1842. A further four were excavated in 1842, "on Bincombe Down on the Ridgeway". They were Nos. 66-69, the last being a twin-barrow, but probaly only one mound was dug into. (4)
