Monument record MDO47862 - Second World War light anti aircraft battery, Holton Heath, Wareham St Martin

Summary
Site of a Light Anti-Aircaft Artillery Battery situated to the south of the Royal Naval Cordite Factory on Holton Heath. It was designed for the defence of that establishment, and is known to have been operational between 1942-3 when it was manned by troops of the 448th Battalion from 84 Regiment. The emplacement was installed with a single 40mm gun mounted on a Mark II platform. There are no surviving remains, but is noted that a building in the vicinity may be associated with the battery. A brick structure at SY95159058 has a flat reinforced concrete roof. It is possible that it was remodelled after the war, and appears that it was used for storage of carbon dioxide (as labelled on the entrance wall). Ground photos with archive report.
