Full Description

The Dorchester Brewery is a significant group of tall and large industrial buildings. They have a distinct character, all being of polychrome brick with slate roofs, and all except the offices are iron-framed with distinctive iron windows. The Malthouse, Brewhouse and Offices were built as a group facing the railway around 1880, and the Bonded Store was added in 1900. Despite a fire in 1922 in the Brewhouse, and alterations over the years, they are all reasonably well preserved. <1> The brewery was originally founded at the Green Dragon Brewery by Charles and Sarah Eldridge in 1837. Sarah continued in the running of the brewery following the death of Charles in 1846 and appointed Alfred Mason as manager. In 1850 the partnership of Eldridge and Mason was formed and in 1854 acquired the Pale Ale Brewery in the High Street. A number of changes to the partnership and company name took place until 1871 when the company became Eldridge, Pope and Company following the involvement of Alfred Pope. Brewing at the Green Dragon site ceased in 1880 following construction of the new brewery, Dorchester Brewery in Weymouth Avenue. The new brewery was designed by W R Crickmay for Alfred Pope and Edwin Pope. The brewery was damaged by a fire in 1922 and it re-opened in 1925. The brewery closed in 2003 and the site redeveloped as a mixed commercial and residential complex known as Brewery Square, with the main brewery buildings including the malthouse and brewhouse and chimney stack being retained. <2-4>
