Full Description
The town probably developed after the conquest, dependant upon the Abbey. In 1166 the abbey demesne were 3.5 Knight's fees with freehold tenure in the vill of Cerne and Henry 11 (1154-89) by undated charter, granted the monks market rights in the vill of Cerne with all their liberties to their knights and free tenants. The abbot's licence to purchase five messuages in 1317-18 may confirm the town's growth. It was probably no more than a moderate agricultural town comparable with Abbotsbury, Dorchester or Weymouth.
