Summary
1362 wreck of English cargo vessel which foundered after grounding on a rock in Ringstead Bay, possibly also being partially burnt, on her passage to Aquitaine with goods belonging to Edward the Black Prince. Constructed of wood, she was a sailing vessel.

Full Description
The ship LA MICHEL, driven ashore by the violence of the sea near Weymouth on her passage to Aquitaine, and her goods carried off by Dorset malefactors. (1)
Nationality stated as English and the date of loss stated as 1366. (1)
Ship MICHAEL of London was "casually wrecked" 1362 at Ringstead by the "violence of the sea". Robert Moreys and fellow keepers of the ship loaded a boat with goods and took them to Weymouth where they sold them for 40 marks. The ship was set fire to. The ship belonged to Richard de Preston and was carrying goods belonging to Edward the Black Prince. (2) [based on transcription in source (7), given as written on the index card below.]
The ship MICHEL of London was casually wrecked "super unum rok" in the sea. Robert Moreys and his fellows, keepers of the ship, loaded a boat with goods therefrom and took them to the port at Waymouth, where they sold them to the value of 40 marks, to whom the jurors do not know; and they set fire to the ship, so that it burnt, and "part of the heavy goods came out" (value unknown). Nov. 12, Westminster. Commission to Nicholas de Poyns and Thomas de Bridport, sheriff of Dorset, to make inquisition in that county touching an information that a ship of Richard de Preston, called LA MICHEL of London, laden with goods of the king's son Edward, prince of Aquitaine and Wales, and his household, was broken by the violence of the sea by the coast of Waymouth, and that many men of Waymouth, Melcombe and other parts entered the ship, carried away the said goods, with the goods of the said Richard and his servants, and the tackling of the ship, to arrest the goods so carried away and cause the goods of Richard and his servants to be delivered to them and the goods of the prince and his household kept safely until the king give further order, certifying him in the chancery of the nature and value of these. Commission to Guy de Bryen and John Chidyok to make inquisition in the county of Dorset touching the carrying away of goods of the king's clerk Master John de Stretle, chancellor of the king's son Edward, prince of Aquitaine and Wales, in a ship of Richard de Preston called LA MICHEL of London, bound for Aquitaine, which was driven ashore by a storm near Waymouth. June 1, Westminster. Commission to Thomas de Brudeport, John de la Hale, sheriff of Dorset, Roger de Manyngford and Roger Sutton, to make inquisition by the oath of mariners and good men of the said county touching the evildoers who entered a ship of Richard de Preston called LA MICHEL of London, laden with goods of the king's clerks Masters John de Stretle and John Barnet, clerks of Edward, prince of Wales and Aquitaine, for Aquitaine, which was driven ashore near Weymuth by the violence of the wind, and carried away goods therefrom, and to seize the goods and deliver them to the said clerks. 1366. May 16. Westminster. Commission to Guy de Briane and John Chideok, reciting that whereas the king lately appointed them to make inquisition in the county of Dorset touching malefactors who entered a ship of Richard de Preston, called LA MICHEL of London, which was driven ashore by the violence of the sea near Weymouth on its passage to the parts of Aquitaine, and took thereform goods of the king's clerk, Master John de Stretleye, then chancellor of Edward, prince of Aquitaine and Wales, and they returned in such inquisition that the ship was broken on a "rok" and sunk, the king has now learned on behalf of the said John, that, after the sinking of the ship, many of his goods on the ship came to land and were carried away by men of those parts and are still detained from him, and he has appointed them to make inquisition in the county of Dorset what goods came to land, and when and by whom they were carried away. (6)
NB: Source (1) states the date of loss as a reporting date of 16-MAY-1366, based on a later entry in the Calendar of Patent Rolls.
