Full Description

'Weymouth, February 1. We have received an account yesterday, that a Danish ship of about 150 tons, laden with wine and brandy, was cast away on the Isle of Purbeck, but the men, with some part of the cargo, are saved.' (1) The named location of Durlston Head has been chosen to express the approximate mid-point of the coastline of the Isle of Purbeck. NB: Prior to the adoption of the Gregorian ["New Style"] Calendar in England in 1752, the Julian ["Old Style"] Calendar was still in use and the New Year additionally began on 25th March. Thus dates between 1st January and 24th March inclusive are normally recorded in contemporary sources as one year "behind" the New Style date, which is the modern reckoning. For consistency, therefore, all wrecks falling in this period in the NMR record are indexed according to the New Style date. Date of Loss Qualifier: Reporting date of loss
