Full Description
'Bridport, Star Garage. This site, on the south side of the East Street (SY 46879285), was cleared for housing development in 1986. Archaeological observations and salvage excavations were carried out by DIHE Archaeology Unit during the early stages of construction. Foundations of several post-medieval buildings were recorded. Associated with these buildings was a fairly elaborate system of drains. Documentary research may shed some light on the functions of these structures. No medieval features were found; but no firm conclusions should be drawn from this, since only a comparatively small area was available for excavation. An archive and report are in preparation.
I wiash to thank Messrs McCarthy and Stone (Developments) Ltd for permission to excavate and for much practical help. I am grateful to Peter Fasham, of the Trust for Wessex Archaeology, for inviting us to investigate the site, and to all who took part, particularly Michael Lester who supervised.' {1}
