Monument record MDO4974 - Round barrow on Barton Hill, Tarrant Hinton
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
One of a group of four Bronze Age round barrows on Barton Hill. In 1972 this monument was reported as being much reduced by ploughing but visible on aerial photographs as a circular soil mark around 55 feet in diameter. A ring ditch, part of a levelled barrow cemetery, visible as cropmarks. A watercourse, also visible as cropmarks, appears to rise just beyond the ring ditch, run across part of its ditch, and continue in the direction of 'celtic' fields to the north.

Full Description
A ring ditch visible as a cropmark on air photographs, it forms part of a levelled barrow cemetery and was originally recorded as part of ST 91 SW 94 (barrow 'D'). Up to 22 metres in diameter, this is the easternmost of the group, lying circa 18 metres east of barrow 'C' (ST 91 SW 110). Its southwestern arc of ditch is obscured by the line of a watercourse, also visible as a cropmark, which appears to rise a short distance south of the ring ditch. It runs for over 100 metres to the northwest, disappearing into the cropmarks of a 'celtic' field system (ST 91 SW 112). Its course, in relation to the contours, suggests that its direction may have been influence by the later field terraces. <2>
