Monument record MDO4996 - Mound, possibly a long barrow, Tarrant Hinton

Please read our .

Summary

An elongated mound which is possibly a long barrow. 30m long and 11m wide. Height is 1.1m. No trace of a side ditch in the west. This may possibly be the spoil of an old excavation. Side ditch seems excessively large compared to the size of the mound. In the north the mound has a small tail which swings to the south east. If it is a long barrow it has been scarped on the east side.

Full Description

A mound 95' long and 3' high with ditch on the SE side. ? Long barrow. <3> [ST 93561218] A grass covered mound parallel to the NE-SW hedge on its east side. It is 30.0m long and 11.0m wide. It has no higher end. Its average height is 1.1m in the east and 0.7m in the west. There is no trace of a side ditch in the west. I doubt if this is a long barrow for the above reasons. It may be the spoil from an old excavation parallel to the mound on the east. Though this has the character of a side ditch it seems excessively large compared to the size of the mound. Furthermore in the North the mound has a small tail which swings to the south east. If it is a long barrow it has been scarped on the east side. <2>
