Monument record MDO51 - Bishop's Limekiln, Abbotsbury
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
A limekiln first recorded as ‘kiln’ on the 1967 Ordnance Survey map. It is shown as disused on the 1886/1901 O/S maps and is not shown on the 1941 tithe map. The kiln was partly built into a bank so that the kiln head was below or level with the quarry floor to facilitate loading. This kiln was built with two timber arch lintels. The original lime shed has now vanished. It was visited in 1992-3 by Peter Stanier and found to be in good condition with 80-90 percent still remaining.
