Monument record MDO5407 - Pottery works, including a pottery kiln, (Alderholt 5), Daggons, Alderholt

Kiln Site, part of the Verwood Potteries, set up in 1822 by James Foster and closed in 1841, when it was demolished to build a barn and cart shed. Only evidence of the former industry is a scatter of pottery sherds. A group of small earthworks including a possible extractive pit are visible at this location on aerial photographs taken in 1946. They are considered to be associated with the site of the kiln and were digitally plotted during the Dorset Stour NMP.

(SU 09301260 NGR sited from Authority 1 fig 16 <5> and OS 1:10560 1963 <2>) Alderholt Kiln 5: A short-lived pottery kiln, set up in 1822 by James Foster, but demolished in 1841. The kiln and workshop were replaced by a barn and cart shed both of which have also been demolished. A small quantity of pottery indicates the site of the kiln. <5> Site of former pottery kiln in use between 1822 and 1841. The holding was enclosed from the common by James Foster in about 1822. It was not apparently a financial success as in 1841, Foster was granted permission to demolish the kiln and workshop and build a barn and cart shed in their place.
