Please read our .

Summary

A lime kiln recorded as ‘old limekiln’ on the second edition (1900-2) Ordnance Survey map. The date of this kiln is not known but it is most likely to be late nineteenth century. The site was visited in 1992-93 by Peter Stanier, who could find no trace of the kiln structure. An extractive pit and banked earthworks potentially associated with the lime kiln are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s, 1970s and the latest Lidar imagery. Full Description

An extractive pit and banked earthworks potentially associated with the lime kiln are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s (1), 1970s (2) and the latest Lidar imagery (3). These are likely to be post medieval in origin. The area of quarrying measures around 82m long and appears to extend under an upstanding field boundary shown on the OS 1st Edition map (4). An aerial photograph of 1947 (1) shows the potential site of the lime kiln on the southwest edge of the extractive pit. In addition, the latest Lidar imagery (3) shows a curved bank or mound around 30m long on the southeast edge of the extractive pit, which may be a spoil heap associated with the quarrying in this area. The extractive pit is still visible on the latest Google Earth imagery, although the site of the lime kiln is not. The site was digitally recorded during the Marshwood Vale NMP.
