Summary

A tree covered oval mound surmounted by a trig point and interpreted as a possible Bronze Age round barrow, though possibly partly natural in origin. In 1970 this monument was reported as being around 148 feet by 176 feet, and 25 feet high. The mound is visible as an earthwork on current Environment Agency lidar imagery and was digitally plotted from this source during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.

Full Description

Mountain Clump, also called 'Soldier's Clump', a barrow according to OGS Crawford, but almost certainly natural. <2> A mound 60.0m in diameter and 4.0m high. It is tree covered and in most unlikely to be a barrow, but appears to be a natural feature. <3> SY 97439739. Mountain Clump or Soldier's Barrow, an oval mound, 148ft west to east by 176ft north to south and 25ft high, surmounted by a trig station. Part of it at least artificial. Tree-covered. <4> Almost certainly a natural feature. <5> The site was surveyed by RCHME staff in 1990 after the storms of in that year, for further information see archive collection. <6> The mound is visible as an earthwork on current Environment Agency lidar imagery and was digitally plotted from this source during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM project.
