Full Description
Sections of the Roman road are visible as banked and ditched linear earthworks on aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery:
A 97m section of the Roman road is visible on current Lidar imagery at Happy Bottom, Corfe Mullen (2). The features comprise two sections of broad linear bank aligned north to south across a level valley bottom. The banks are clearly part of one larger feature cut by a later feature; the OS 1st Edition map records a trackway aligned along historic field boundaries that crosses the site from west to east (7).
A 570m section to the west of Barrow Hill is visible as broken linear banked earthworks flanking a central linear ditch on 1940s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery (2-4). The road is recorded on the OS 1st Edition map, which shows a linear trackway running along its west side (7). 1940s aerial photographs show the earthworks criss crossed by trackways and also some disturbance through post medieval extraction (3-4).
A 736m section at Corfe Hills is visible as broken linear banks and scarps, with sections of flanking outer ditches, on 1940s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery (2 and 5-6). The road is showing as a relatively intact earthwork at this location on the OS 1st Edition map (7). The site is partially trees and partially housing on current Google Earth imagery where the line of the Roman road is mirrored by a later modern estate road.
The features were digitally plotted from aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
