Monument record MDO55 - Lime kiln at Berry Knap, Abbotsbury

Summary
A limekiln described as ‘limekiln’ on the 1901 Ordnance Survey map and shown as ‘Kiln’ on the 1967 OS map, but not depicted on the 1841 Tithe map. This kiln saw duty during the Second World War as it commands a view down the valley to the Fleet and Chesil Beach and a small pill box was errected upon it. It was visited in 1992-3 by Peter Stanier and found to be in poor condition with only 20-39% remaining.

Full Description
A lime kiln is marked at this location on the first edition OS map; it is visible on the second edition map, but not marked as a lime kiln. (1) The site is visible as an extant structure on aerial photographs taken in 1946 {2} and was digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.
