Summary

The butt end of a Neolithic polished stone axehead was found in 1964, whilst a bank probably associated with an Iron Age/Romano-British settlement near to the Cursus was being bulldozed. A polished felsite pebble found nearby was identified as a possible hone stone. The axehead is in the possession of Martin Green of Down Farm, Woodcutts. [NB Moore 1969 locates the findspot to ST 989140. This is actually some distance from both the Cursus and the nearest earthworks]

Full Description

The butt end of a Neolithic polished stone axe of Group VII was found in 1964 at ST 99121413 <3>, whilst a bank was being bulldozed. The bank, probably associated with the Iron Age/Romano-British settlement (ST 91 SE 3), is near to the Cursus (SU 01 NW 91). The axe is in the possession of Martin Green of Down Arm, Woodcutts. A polished felsite pebble, perhaps a prehistoric hone stone, was found nearby. <2> The butt end of a polished stone axe and possible hone stone were found when a bank was being bulldozed. The bank may have been associated with the adjacent Iron Age/Romano-British settlement. The axe has been identified as a Group VII axe from Graig Lwyd in North Wales. Serial no. Dorset 1406, County no. 110. Worked pebble of devitrified rhyolite. In the collection of T A Green. <4>
