Summary

A bell barrow reported as having a mound around 66 feet in diameter and seven feet high, surrounded by a berm (flat area) about 12 feet wide with a ditch about 12 feet wide outside it. The feature is visible on 1940s aerial photographs and on current Lidar imagery and was digitally plotted from these sources by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Full Description

Situated on slightly higher ground than the surrounding country, and on heathland. B. The mound is 32.0m. Diameter - taken from the centre of the surrounding ditch - and 3.3m. High. A sloping berm approximately 3.0m. Wide is intermittently visible immediately inside the ditch, or is on the general level with the ground surrounding the barrow. The ditch, up to 4.0m. Wide and 0.8m deep has been partially mutilated on the south side by a modern track. Gorse and bush covered. <2> (b) (SZ 06789937) A bell barrow. The berm is vague and is nearly overspread by the mound. <3> SZ 06799937. Bell barrow, mound 66 feet in diameter and 7 feet high, with a berm 12 feet wide and a ditch 12 feet wide and one foot deep. Scheduled. <4-5> A Bronze Age bowl barrow is visible to the west of Heath Farm, Hampresteon, on 1940s aerial photographs and on current Lidar imagery <6-7>. The feature comprises a sub-circular mound approximately 32m in diameter; this includes the flatter area or berm, which is visible in sections in 1945 but which is not distinct on either aerial photographs or current Lidar imagery. The outer ditch is well defined and around 2m wide. The feature was digitally plotted from aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
