Full Description

(Centred at:- SZ 057993) T Dayrell-Reed says there was formerly a possible Long Barrow here. <1> Although there are undulations in this field none, could be traced out to resemble the remains of a ploughed down long barrow. The area delineated on the 0.S. 6" is under crop and part of the field has recently been ploughed. The field is on flat ground, not chalk, and is close to the river, and topographically seems an unlikely situation for a long barrow. Air photos are not available at the time of the investigation. <2> The origin of this reported monument is not clear. Examination of aerial photographs reveals no discernible signs of a long barrow. The feature may be faintly visible on current Lidar imagery <3> as a heavily truncated elliptical mound approximately 71.6m long by 51.8m wide. Just the outline of the possible feature is discernable and its true form is not certain. It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
