Monument record MDO5711 - Bell barrow on Cannon Hill, Colehill

Summary
A Bronze Age bell barrow situated in heathland near the crest of a hill. In 1972 this barrow was described as being a mound about 75 feet in diameter and 9 feet high, encircled by a flat area (berm) 8 feet wide and a ditch around 7 feet wide. The barrow is visible on current Lidar imagery and was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.

Published surveys (25" 1900) revised. <1>
There are six barrows in the parish; one of them, either (7), (8) or (9), was excavated by J.H. Austen in 1845 with no resulting finds (C.T.D. Pt 2 No.32). … (9) Bell (04610094), 300 yds. E.S.E. of (8) lies on lower ground and is much overgrown; diameter of mound 75 ft, height 9 ft. A berm up to 8ft. wide is surrounded by a ditch 7ft. wide and 1 ft. deep. <3>
'C'. SU 04610094. Bell (?) barrow, overall diameter 34.0 metres, height 2.6 metres, with a ditch 2.5 metres wide and 0.4 metres deep. There is now no visible evidence of a berm. Resurveyed at 1:2500 on M.S.D. <4>
The barrow is visible on current Lidar imagery <5> as a sub-circular mound around 27m in diameter and with the suggestion of a ditch up to 2.6m wide on its east side. The feature is under trees on current Google Earth imagery and its condition is not known.
It was digitally plotted by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
