Full Description

In 1976 a pottery kiln waste dump was discovered on the eastern edge of Horton village on Tithe Map Plot 79 (SU 03150753). Fragments of 700 vessels were recovered, all of the mid-17th century. Other finds included lead slag, an iron space shoe and fragments of a possible iron bowl. A few fragments of partially-fused brick were the only traces of a kiln, but the kiln could not have been more than a few metres from the excavation. <1> Horton Kiln 1: The earliest reference to a potter at Harton is William Frost in 1616. William Frost and subsequently his son, William Frost Jnr. Operated a pottery kiln until c. 1686. <3> Over 30 types of vessels were recovered from the 1976 excavations. All forms were well-made, often having a high quality glaze. <6>
