Summary

A bowl barrow reported as being around 24 feet in diameter with a mound less than one foot high. Excavations by Pitt-Rivers revealed that the mound covered a cremation burial.

Full Description

A bowl barrow in Scrubbity Coppice, one of a group excavated by Pitt Rivers in 1882-83. Pitt Rivers' barrow xiii (RCHME's Sixpenny Handley 47, Grinsell's Handley 5), it was excavated on January 24th 1883. Located immediately north of ST 91 NE 95, prior to excavation it comprised a very small mound 24 feet in diameter and barely visible as a slight rise above the ground surface. The mound comprised earth and flints, and covered a deposit of ashes circa 5 feet across and 9 inches thick, among which were the remains of a single cremation. The only other finds were 27 flint flakes and a flint core. No ditch was located around the mound. [NB this site was originally recorded as part of ST 91 NE 17.
