Summary

Observations during topsoil stripping on the route of a pipeline from Purbeck to Southampton in 1989 revealed a shallow ditch. Part of the filling of the ditch consisted of a band of black soil, and this was found to contain large amounts of pottery of eleventh to twelfth-century date.
