Full Description

A bowl barrow 27 paces in diameter. 6 ft. high, surrounded by a ditch 3 paces wide. 1 ft. deep. <3> A heather-covered bowl barrow 25.0m. in diameter and 2.0m. high. The surrounding ditch is 2.0m. wide and 0.3m. deep. <4> SZ 08369859. Mag's Barrow. Bowl barrow, 84 feet in diameter and 6 feet high with a substantial ditch around it. <5> The barrow is visible on 1940s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery and was digitally plotted from these by the Dorset Stour NMP project (2, 9). The feature is visible on current Lidar imagery as a low elliptical mound 27.8m long by 24.4m wide (4). The northwest side of the mound appears cut through, possibly by activity associated with th wartime military camp (MDO41394) which closely surrounded it during the Second World War. An outer ditch is also visible on current Lidar imagery; this appears to vary in width between 1.2m and 2.4m. It also appears to be truncated on its north side by modern housing development but a 1945 aerial photograph appears to show it intact on the north side at this time (2 and 9). The outer ditch may also have been truncated or cut by a post medieval field boundary (MDO41395), although its line is still visible on current Lidar imagery, suggesting it may survive below ground (9). A possible sub-circular earthwork 4.8m long by 4.6m wide is visible on top of the barrow and offset slightly northeast of centre in a 1945 aerial photograph (2). The earthwork has a 1.7m by 1.4m opening or hollow at its centre. This may have been a military dug-out or observation post assoicated with the adjacent wartime military camp (MDO41394). The feature is below trees on current Google Earth imagery, where it is situated in the middle of a modern housing estate.
