Full Description

The top of the sample column was 67 cm below the present day surface, and comprised about 130cm of organic peat, fluviatile silts and sands containing freshwater molluscs. Pollen assemblages from this column indicated a wooded landscape in the vicinity of the mire, followed by a decline in elm and dominance of cereal and weed pollen attributed to the primary elm decline around 5000BP, and marking the earliest incidence of Neolithic occupation and arable activity. The sedimentary sequence appears to have ceased in the early to middle Bronze Age. SU 0117 0038 - 0114 0020
