Monument record MDO6294 - Bowl barrow with intrusive air raid shelter, Wimborne St Giles

Please read our .

Summary

A Bronze Age round barrow of a type known as a bowl barrow situated in Drive Plantation, within the grounds of St Giles's Park. It was described by RCHME as a mound damaged by cultivation but measuring 80 feet in diameter and 9 feet in height. RCHME noted a hole dug into the centre. This suggests that this barrow has been dug into by antiquarians. In 1954, an Ordnance Survey field investigator was informed that a small chamber in the south side of the barrow was a former air-raid shelter for the use of the occupants of the adjoining house, Cranborne Lodge.
