Full Description
The end of a probable Neolithic flint axe was found east of Coombe Farm, Castleton some time prior to 1954. <1>
Fowler mentions that the Rev. J. Goodden picked a partially polished neolithic flint axe from the surface of 'one of the sandy-soiled fields to the north of Sherborne' and that several portions of different axe heads of similar kind have also been found in the same corner of the field. <2>
Unfortunatlely Fowler does not give any further information regarding the location of these finds and it is not clear if they are related to the C E Bean axe head the grid refernce for which which falls in a field underlain by Inferior Oolite bedrock rather than sands. Nevertheless, the area to the north of Sherborne has produced a number of neolithic axes.
