Summary
Fieldwalking revealed a concentration of medieval pottery in this area. This has been interpreted as a probable area of medieval settlement, and possibly the lost village of Baggeridge.

Full Description
(Area SU 029090) The deserted Medieval settlement of Baggeridge in Woodlands parish mentioned in a document of 1272-3, is thought to have been situated near Bagman's Copse. This is called "Bagenham Coppice" on the 1841 Tithe Map, and the most likely position for the settlement appears to be a triangular piece of unenclosed pasture shown on the Tithe Map to the west of the copse and south of a house occupying the position of the present chalk-pit. This area has been ploughed for many years and no traces of habitation now exist. <1-3>
