Full Description
Two sarcophagi were found as part of a Romano-British cemetery in the Breakwater quarries at the Grove, Portland in 1852 during quarrying works there. They were diagonally tooled of Portland stone, with 3 inch walls and ridge roofed lids about 1ft high. The smaller of the two is 6ft 3 inches long overall; the larger is 6ft 10 inches by 2ft and 1ft 6 inches high. The larger contained two skeletons head to foot, without any grave goods.(1)
