Full Description

Southdown Farm Lodmoor. An inhumation burial and occupation debris were found in making a road east of the farmhouse about 100ft above sea level (about 68738189). A skeleton, found at a depth of about 7ft by the builder, Mr A C Wheltham, but removed before examination, was believed by V L Oliver and C D Drew to have been buried at the bottom of a shallow domestic pit containing burnt material, oyster shells and iron nails. <1-2> Burial 120m east of Southdown Farm discovered during construction of Brackendown Avenue in 1934. Romano-British Pottery also found in pit. Suggests the possible presence of Romano-British cemetery and some form of settlement. <3>
