Full Description

During alterations to Letter box Cottage in 1951 stone paving was discovered. The paving consisted of a single layer of blocks and slabs of limestone carefully laid on clayey soil. It was approximately 3and a half ft. wide and 21ft of it survived. It had a raised curb on its east side running approximately N-S. The western edge of the paving may have been destroyed by the laying of a later path or perhaps the construction of the cottage. The exact purpose of the paving is not certain, it is suggested it may have been part of a road to a ford on the Wey just below the present bridge over the river. The soil beneath the paving contained sherds, some of which were 17th century slip ware and other fragments which may have been 18th century glazed ware. From this evidence the paving is not likely to be earlier than the 17th century. (1) A further portion of the paving was uncovered in 1957 on the south side of the part of the paving previously recorded. The curb was not visible and the pavement came to an end 25 to 30 yards before the edge of the stream. (2)
