Full Description

Bowl Barrow about 9.5 m in diameter and 0.8 m high. It was described as very irregular and spread, but unopened, in 1919. (1) In 1955, the barrow was described as a grass covered mound 9.5m in diameter and 0.8m high, rounded and well formed. This description in no way conforms to the earlier description. The grass covering of the mound, in an area of heather suggests that it has been excavated and completely 're-built'. By 1987, the whole of the east side of the barrow had been removed. The vicinity of the barrow has suffered extensive stripping and two small mounds close by appear to be upcast. (2) A small sub-circular feature at this location is faintly visible on 1940s aerial photographs and may be the barrow identified here (4). It is visible as a low mound of exposed ground, possibbly laid bare through adjacent quarrying activity (MDO41222). There is the suggestion of a possible ditch about 0.5 m in width. The feature was digitally plotted from the 1940s aerial photograph by the Dorset Stour NMP project.
