Summary
In June 1985 a machine trench for the new Turlin Moor Sewer exposed a section of the Hamworthy-Badbury Roman Road to the south of Upton House. The road survived as a layer of gravel overlying a black sandy soil, probably the remains of a turf stack.

Full Description
In June 1985 a machine trench for the new Turlin Moor Sewer exposed a section of the Hamworthy-Badbury Roman Road. The sequence consisted of a single layer of gravel 0.3 m thick overlying a black sandy soil which sealed the base of a podsol soil profile. The investigation of the same road 500m to the south at Vineyards Copse had demonstrated that the black sandy soil was the remains of a turf stack. (1)
