Summary

Several flint and stone artefacts including a greenstone axe, two flint axes and four picks were found in a gravel pit at Alder Hills. Some, if not all, of these finds are Neolithic in date.

Full Description

(SZ 06169315) Stone implements, four picks, two flint celts, one stone celt. <1> The gravel pit is disused, and no information was obtainable at the site, and no surface finds were made during Investigation. These implements were found before the 1939-45 War. The stone axe, of greenstone, has been examined by the S.W. Axe Committee (No. 418). It is in the Calkin Collection at the BM (No. 1940. 7.1.582). One flint axe is in the same collection, the other is probably the one in the Red House Museum, Christchurch, part of the late H P Smith Collection, which axe is labelled as 'from Branksome'. Two flint picks are in the Calkin Collection at the BM, Mr Calkin cannot find a record of the location of the other two. <2>
