Full Description

A previously unrecorded bowl barrow near the western edge of Canford Heath was identified during fieldwork in 1986 by Ken Standing and John Smith. The mound is described as 28 m 'in circumference' and about one metre high. A number of worked flints were recovered from the surface of the mound (1 end scraper, 35 flakes, 5 cores). (1) A site visit in October 1992 by Keith Jarvis confirmed that it does seem to be a barrow with some modern damage and that the NGR of 0188 9615 is about right. "NGR given as 0188 9815 in proceedings text quoted in SMR but this does not tie up with the description in same text as 250m N of barrow excavated by Poole in 1975. It seems likely that a numerical error was made in the original NGR and the correct NGR is 0188 9615. This has been assumed when the NGR was plotted on the SMR map. I have visited the site 10/92 and can confirm that it does seem to be a barrow with some modern damage and that the NGR of 0188 9615 is about right."(2)
