Summary

Early sixteenth century barn. Built of greensand and chalk-block with corrugated iron roof over thatch. Two laterally opposed nineteenth century porches.

Full Description

(ST 66480148) Barn, sited 130 yds north-north-west of the Guest House, of seven bays with much repaired collar-beam roof. Probably 15th century though the porches are later. The gabled south wall has a doorway with chamfered jambs and four centred head, above which is a fragment carved with 13th century foliage. <1> North Barn. 75m NNW of Abbot's Porch. <2> The barn is constructed of large squared blocks of stone. The porches are largely rebuilt in brick and the roof is of corrugated iron. The doorway in the south end is as described. Windows in the west and south are modern inserts with concrete sills. In poor condition. Published 1:2500 survey correct. <3>
