Full Description
Bowl Barrow, destroyed by 1948. RCHM (Arne No 12). <1>
The remains of a Bronze Age round barrow are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of Arne Hill in 1947 <7> . The internal mound is approximately 9.6m in diameter and after a gap of 5.5m is surrounded by an outer bank approximately 1.9m wide and 24m in overall diameter. An aerial photograph taken of this area in 1952 <8> indicates that by this time the barrow may have been destroyed or heavily modified and incorporated as part of the Second World War Heavy Anti Aircraft battery that was located nearby (MWX675). This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset). This feature is not visible on the most recent comprehensive imagery available to the project <9>, the area now being heavily overgrown by vegetation cover.
