Full Description
Salterns Copse (SY 964870 on OS 6 1925) and surrounding area (c.f. Saltings on OS 6) may indicate the location of salt-pans mentioned as adjacent to the manor of Langton (Wallis) circa 1165 (Montacute Cartulary) and salt-pits of Middlebere, 1376. In the second survey of Shaftesbury Abbey lands (late 12th century) there is an account of Arne which consisted of one hide devoted entirely to the production of salt; over 20 tenants of the abbey holding one or more salt-pans each. The account also mentions plumba or leaden vessels used to collect and boil the sea-water and isolate the salt. (1-2)
