Monument record MDO7109 - Bronze Age bowl barrow,east of Furze Coppice, Bere Regis

A Bronze Age bowl barrow is visible as an earthwork on lidar imagery to the south east of Furze Coppice, Bere Regis. One of two bowl barrows situated on a ridge overlooking the Bere Valley to the north east and Piddle Valley to the south west. The barrows are 500 metres to the north west of the broadly contemporary round barrow cemetery on Blackhill. The barrows each have a mound composed of sand, earth and turf, with maximum dimensions of between 14 to 15 metres in diameter and around 1.1 to 1.25 metres in height. Surrounding each mound is a ditch from which material was quarried during the construction of the monument. The ditches have become infilled over the years, but each will survive as a buried feature 1.5 metres wide.

A has a diameter of 13.5 metres and a height of 1.4 metres and no surrounding ditch. It has been mutilated by the passage of vehicles in an East-West direction. Resurveyed at 1:2500 on M.S.D. <4> A- A bowl barrow; no details given. <5> A Bronze Age bowl barrow is visible as an earthwork on lidar imagery to the south east of Furze Coppice, Bere Regis. The barrow is formed of a sub-circular mound measuring 12 m in diameter. <6> It is scheduled together with a second barrow located approximately 72 m to the south east (see linked record). This feature was digitally plotted as part of the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.
