Monument record MDO7213 - Bowl barrow, one of the Bloxworth Down Group, Bloxworth

A bowl barrow. In 1970 this monument was reported as being around 100 feet in diameter with a mound about 5 feet high. The site of this round barrow is visible as a low earthworks on lidar imagery and cropmarks on aerial photographs. It has been trunkated on its western side by a modern field boundary and was digitally recorded during the Dorset Middle Stour AIM.

All bowl barrows; 'A' is 36 paces in diameter and 3 1/2 feet high; 'B' is 25 paces by 1 foot; 'C' is 21 paces by 2 feet. Either 'A' or 'B' was opened in 1854 and contained a probable primary cremation with a bone pin; at least two secondary cremations beneath inverted MBA collared urns and a cremation just below the top in an inverted urn. Near this were six intrusive skeletons - Warnes No 13. <2> Three bowl barrows with no evidence of ditches. On a southern slope under stubble and grass. 'A' and 'C' have the approximate dimensions given by Grinsell. All are somewhat spread and mutilated and 'B' is now ploughed out. <3> 'A' - (42). SY 87529650. Bowl (?) barrow 100ft. Diameter and 5ft. High but badly damaged. <5> The barrows are presently under crop and inaccessible. None are visible on (b). 'A'. Visible under crop. Measured from track the bowl barrow is 36.4 metres in diameter and 1.8 metres high. Not visible on (a) but visible on © (See ground photograph). The published diameter of 'A' corresponds with the measured diameter, therefore the present depictions of 'A', 'B' and 'C' are accepted. <6> The site of this round barrow is visible as a low earthworks on lidar imagery and cropmarks on aerial photographs.
