Full Description

From SY 787820 groups of Medieval strip lynchets run south to south west along the sides of a dry valley. At the south they clearly overlie 'Celtic' fields (see SY 78 SE 14) and riser heights are uneven because of incorporation of pre-existing lynchets. <1> The Medieval strip lynchets centred at SY 789821, covering an area of 1.2 ha, remain as described by RCHM. Area outlined on 1:10 560 Record Sheet.<2> A series of linear banks are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs <3-4> and Lidar imagery <5> of Chaldon Down. They are considered likely to be the remains of a medieval field system. These features were digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset). Additional elements of the medieval field system were recorded from aerial photographs of 1945 <6>. Four east-west oriented linear banks were visible as earthworks immediately to the north of the features described above, centred at SY 379245 82265. These features were digitally plotted as part of the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.
