Full Description

Two mounds; possibly barrows, above the 600ft contour and about 400m. north north east of the known barrow on Swyre Head (see SY 97 NW 9), were noted by P. A. Brown. The more northerly mound lies in a field west of Polar Wood, at SY 93577884; the other, about 70m south, at SY 93567876, is crossed by the field wall and track running south west from the wood. <1> SY 93567876. Church Knowle 15. Barrow? listed with reference to Authy 1. <2> B: SY 93557875. A barrow, crossed by a field wall to the NW of which the ground is cultivated and to the SE is permanent pasture. The NE/SW diameter, along the wall, is 12.5m; the NW/SE diameter is 9m due to truncation by ploughing on the NW side. The barrow is 0.7m high with a flat top 5m across. Ploughing has exposed an earth and limestone rubble content in its composition. Surveyed at 1:2500 on OS plan. <3> One of two small bowl barrows to the west of Polar Wood. Two small low mounds are visible as earthworks on Channel Coast Observatory lidar <4-5> and were digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
