Monument record MDO7617 - Lime kiln near Ower Passage, Corfe Castle
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
A lime kiln identified by Peter Stanier who suggests that maps in the Dorset History Centre (DRO.D/RWR/E16/9, dated 1772, and DRO.D/RWR/P3, dated 1805) show a kiln with two flues at this location. A lease of 1730 in the Dorset History Centre (DRO.D/RWR/T75/4) gave William Cooper ‘the free liberty and privilege of making, erecting and setting up a Lime kiln’ at Qwer, and a lease three years later refers to a ‘new…Lime kilne’. The kiln is not shown on the second edition (1900-2) Ordnance Survey map. The date of this kiln is not known, but it is clearly at least late eighteenth century in date. Dr Stanier visited the site in 1992-3, and could find no trace of the kiln structure.
