Summary
The possible site of a Romano British pottery kiln was exposed during the laying of drains near Holme Priory. Limited excavation revealed a shallow pit containing ash and a considerable quantity of black-burnished ware. Because the pottery found was restricted to three forms, this was interpreted as a probable pottery manufacturing site.

Full Description
Three RB coins found in the gardens of Holme Priory. <1>
Two coins of Constantine the Great, one illegible, found some years before 1947. Now in the possession of the gardener whose father found them. The gardener could not be contacted during field investigation, but the gardens are centred at SY 89638596. No closer location of the find-spot is possible. <2>
SY 896859. East Holme - a trial excavation following exposures made in laying drains near Holme Priory revealed a shallow pit containing ash and a considerable quantity of black-burnished ware. The fact that this pottery was restricted to three forms suggests that it was being manufactured on the site. <3>
Further research is required in order to confirm the character and extent of this site. The current evidence is too inconclusive to recommend scheduling. Ground photo with archive report. <6>
