Monument record MDO8048 - Bowl barrow in Piddle Wood, Turners Puddle

Summary
Bowl barrow situated on a ridge overlooking the Bere Valley to the north. The barrow has a mound of sand, earth and turf, with maximum dimensions of 16 metres in diameter and approximately 1.8 metres in height. The northern edge of the barrow has been levelled for the construction of a track. Surrounding the mound is a ditch from which material was quarried during the construction of the monument. The ditch has become infilled over the years, but will survive as a buried feature 2 metres wide.

Full Description
Surveyed at SY 8259 9474, this barrow has a diameter of 16.0 metres and a height in the South of 1.9 metres. It has no surrounding ditch, and has been mutilated by a shooting drive which has cut one metre deep into the Northern quadrant. Slight mutilation by rabbit burrows. The barrow is covered with small bushes. A bowl barrow. <2>
SY 8260 9474. Bowl (?) barrow, about 45ft diameter and 9ft high at most, situated in Piddle Wood. Damaged and thickly overgrown. Grinsell, however, in 1959, using RCHM records, listed this as a possible barrow 15 paces diameter and 2ft high. <3> <5>
