Monument record MDO807 - Medieval building at West Hill, Charminster

Summary
Two parallel stone walls approximately 6 metres apart and the remains of a hearth were recorded in 1997 during archaeological evaluation of a site proposed for housing. These were interpreted as the front and rear external walls of a domestic building fronting the main road. Associated pottery suggested that the house was built and used in the late 12th to early 13th century and was abandoned in the later 13th century.

Full Description
In the northeast area of the site, two parallel flint walls were discovered. These were aligned NW-SE and 6m apart. One wall was 0.75m wide with a surviving height of 0.4m, and the second, only partly exposed, had a height of 0.35m. In the same trench, a stone-built domestic hearth was found. It was made up of rectangular stones covering an area of 1.50m by 1.20m, and continued beyond the trench wall.
