Summary

A mound surrounded by an outer ditch is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs and Lidar imagery of Hambury Tout. It is considered likely to be the site of a late prehistoric round barrow. It is one of three potential round barrows located on Hambury Tout (see also MDO8244-45).

Full Description

Ditched bowl barrow, 46ft diameter and 4ft high with ditch about 9ft wide, situated on spine of ridge sloping west-north-west. The top of mound is markedly flattened but not obviously opened. <1> Mound visible on air photographs. <2> (SY 81198039) Hambury Tout Round Barrows. Scheduled. (This barrow is included in the above scheduling). <3-4> SY 81198039. Bowl Barrow, diameter 19.5m. overall including a ditch 2.0m. wide and 0.6m. deep. Height of mound is 1.2m. The barrow is grass-covered and well-preserved. Surveyed at 1:2500 on M.S.D. <5> A mound, approximately 13.4m in diameter, surrounded by a 1.5m wide outer ditch, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs <6-8> and Lidar imagery <9> of Hambury Tout. It is considered likely to be the site of a late prehistoric round barrow. It is one of three potential round barrows located on Hambury Tout (see also MDO8244-45). This feature was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
